Pawleen at 9 Years

Rest In Peace, Sweet Pawleen!

Pawleen
Breed: Great PyreneesWeight: 88 pounds
Gender: Female
Favorite Food: Pawleen loves the new samples of Flint River Ranch Trout and Potato. Flint River Ranch Puppy and Adult Kibble has been the only dog kibble she will eat. A very picky eater with a very picky guardian (me), I mix her kibble with a rice/meat/vegetable recipe I have been making for her for most of her life.
Favorite Activities: Pawleen loves to play in the water, go for walks, and socialize with other people as much as she does her dog friends.
Favorite Place to Sleep: Very affectionate but independent, she prefers to sleep wherever it's cooler, in the summer, usually indoors, in the winter, out.
Special Skills or Responsibilities: She takes her work seriously—she guards her people flock and property very well.

She listens carefully to conversations, and has a vocabulary of about 200 words in English and Spanish. She howls with the train, and has turned into a music critic in her older age (I teach music lessons at home).

Story: She was believed to be born in a puppy mill, was found wandering in a schoolyard when she was 5 or 6 months old, and brought in to the Town Lake Animal Shelter. It was love at first sight for us.
Pawleen was about 9 when that photo was taken. It's one of my favorites—her typical happy smile. She's now a healthy (although a little stiff in the hips) 12-year-old. Pawleen has maintained a steady 88-93 pounds her whole life.

She gets a summer haircut every year, and this summer she donated her hair to help clean up the Gulf oil spill. The bag of her hair weighed 2½ pounds!

She has her own website, www.tallerdog.com, which we share. On the home page you can see this summer's before and after shots of her donation.

Pawleen's time came on Nov 30, I had a vet make a home call and we assisted Pawleen in crossing the river - to Rainbow Bridge or doggie heaven or whatever we all want to call it. Behaving like a classic pyr, and being a serious working dog, her spirit stayed with us for three more days, then went off to check out the new surroundings, and came back home a few days after that. (It used to be about 20 minutes, but I figure there's a lot more terrain to cover now).

I'm very sad, but still feel OK about this. We had a good run together for more than 13 years. She was a rescue.
