Kalalau at 10 Years

Kalalau
Breed: Border Collie MixGender: Female
Nickname: Kali
Story: Kali's Amazing Story: In September of 1993, my husband Joe and I were hiking on the Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali Coast of Kauai. Just beyond the trail head, an emaciated, mangy little puppy with irresistibly soulful eyes started following us. She stayed with us for about two miles, until we stopped out of concern for her condition—she didn't look strong enough to make it much further, and we didn't want to continue until we decided what to do with her.

At that point, the fates sent the Kaplans, a kind and generous couple from Los Angeles, who were hiking back toward the trail head. They offered to take the puppy back to the cottage they were renting in nearby Haena and give her some food and water, and we promised to meet them later that day and figure out what to do with her.

By the time we'd finished our hike and made it back to the Kaplans' cottage, we'd pretty much decided to find a way to take her back to San Francisco with us. The problem was, we were staying at a B&B—which we somehow suspected wouldn't exactly welcome a parasite-ridden, starving canine refugee as a guest—and had a side trip to Maui planned before departing from Honolulu back to California.

Fortunately, the Kaplans agreed to keep her while we finished our travel and made the many arrangements to get the pup off the island: a trip to the local vet for shots and a health certificate (when we brought her in, he stared somberly at her, then at us, and muttered, "Lucky dog!"), a visit to the pet shop for a portable kennel, sessions in the airlines' reservation customer service telephone queue, etc.

In the end, it all worked out—she arrived safe and sound, if a bit spooked, in the cargo terminal at SFO and took her place as our "first baby." Joe and I have since had two kids and moved from the Bay Area to a small town in Massachusetts, where we hike in the woods with her almost every day. We don't know if she remembers anything about her Hawaiian birthplace, but her name is a tribute to it: Kalalau is the Hawaiian word for "wandering one."
